CTIA Wood Quality Working Group

Theme: Managing for wood quality attributes and economic value

The Wood Quality Working Group Workshop will be held on August 25, 2008. Until recently, tree breeders have focused on maximizing plantation yield in order to sustain the wood supply for the forest industry. The commodity-based and export-orientated forest industry in Canada is shifting toward value-added products to increase its global competitiveness, it is becoming increasingly important to improve end-use fibre attributes (in addition to tree growth) sought by the industry and markets, and manage plantations for those desirable attributes and maximum economic value. Any oral and poster presentations addressing these topics are welcome.

Participation at this workshop is open to all attendees at the 2008 IUFRO-CTIA Joint Conference.

Keynote Speaker:
Harry X. WU, Ensis, CSIRO, Kingston, Australia. Overcoming adverse genetic correlation between wood quality and quantity traits through development of breeding objective in advanced breeding generation of radiata pine.
