CWFC Conifer Somatic Embryogenesis Workshop

Theme: Application of conifer somatic embryogenesis in genetics, breeding and genomics

The workshop on conifer somatic embryogenesis (SE) will be held on August 26, 2008. Somatic embryogenesis (SE) is a vegetative propagation technique based on tissue culture whereby genetically identical copies of trees are produced in unlimited numbers; it is the primary enabling technology for all conifer biotechnology products. With recent advances in the technology, SE is now implemented in commercial tree breeding and deployment programs.  Recently, under the development plan of the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre (CWFC), the National Network of SE Laboratories has been launched to establish effective collaboration in R&D and implementation of the technology. During this workshop, the role of SE in forest genetics and breeding, genetic resource conservation, and tree genomics research will be discussed.

Participation at this workshop is open to all attendees at the 2008 IUFRO-CTIA Joint Conference.

Speakers:
Yill-Sung Park (CFS), Krystyna Klimaszewska (CFS), Greg Adams (JD Irving), Patrick von Aderkas (Univ. Victoria), and others.
